Deciding on which dentist to use can be a very difficult decision. There are so many and it is hard to tell which ones are good. There is a dentist in my area that has been doing dental work for ever 20 years and that is one way I know that he is a good dentist. You want to find a dentist with plenty of experience. Now days, because there are so many dentists, many dentist will try and specialize in only a few kinds of treatments. This only makes it harder for those seeking dental assistance to find the right dentist.

When I’m trying to find a dentist in my area that will meet my needs, I always consider the following things:

1. Where is this dentist’s office located? If the office is far away or has limited parking, then this is something that might prevent me from visiting him or her as often as I should. Also, some offices can be located in areas that you might not feel completely safe at. You should always consider where you have to go to see your dentist when selecting one.

2. How professional is the dentist and his or her staff? Locating a dentist in my area that stands out above the others sometimes comes down to their mannerisms toward me. It is always important to feel comfortable and professionally welcomed at the dentist’s office. Part of this includes how much they show that they respect your time.

3. Like I mentioned before, you want to find a dentist that is most comprehensive in the procedures that they will do. Some dentists will only do certain ones. The dentist in my area that I see does most of the basic procedures. This is a very important aspect to consider and you should ask the dentist which one’s he or she will do.

4. Find out what kinds of anesthesia’s the dentists use. Some dentists will only use sedation dentistry and you want a dentist that can offer you a whole spectrum of choices so you can select the one that will make you the most comfortable during those painful visits.

5. Lastly, you need to find out what kinds of billing services the dental office offers. Your dental office should be flexible with your billing needs. They should make it convenient for you for every visit. The dentist in my area simply sends me a bill in the mail, and I find that very convenient. In addition, make sure that your dental insurance plan covers the services of that office.

These five steps are among the many criteria that should be used when selecting a dentist. In addition to using these steps, you can also ask your friends or family members for referrals to their dentists. You can also contact a university with that has an on-site clinic. They can refer you to a competent dentist. When finding a dentist in my area that could meet my needs, I asked my family members who they liked and why. This helped me select a good dentist.

Most people are unaware of how important their colon is to their health. As a result, they do not make having a healthy colon a priority. The American diet has spread across the world and with it a plague of illness. It is a high fat, high sugar, low fiber diet that lacks nutrition. It can be directly linked to adult diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and colon related illnesses amongst other health issues. Countries that rarely saw these problems are seeing a dramatic increase in them. The common factor is the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.; and sad, it is).

Cleansing the colon must therefore begin with diet. There is not a lot of point going on a juice fast, for example, and ending it with a Big Mac. The first step to a healthy colon is a healthy diet. Avoid processed and fast foods as well as all soft drinks. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables with some whole grains and protein. Drink plenty of fresh water. A natural, healthy diet will go a long way towards keeping your colon clean.

However, if you have been eating a low fiber, highly processed diet, you will benefit from a complete, initial colon cleanse. The most common and effective approaches to colon cleansing are juice fasting, herbal detox supplements and colon hydrotherapy.

Juice Fasting

Combinations of juices including beetroot, celery, carrot and apple are successfully used to flush out the colon while still providing nutrition. These juices also help to cleanse the blood of toxins that are released during the fast. However, citrus juices should not be used during the fast except for a small amount of lemon juice in water. A seven day juice fast is usually adequate to clean out the colon. Reintroduce foods gradually, starting with soups and raw vegetables.

Herbal Detox Supplements

There are a number of good quality herbal detox products on the market. These herbal combinations often include fiber when in the powdered form. This helps to get the colon moving properly. They may also include liver support herbs such as milk thistle so that toxins can more easily be eliminated from the body.

Colon Hydrotherapy (Colonic Irrigation)

This colon cleanse method involves washing out the colon by inserting a hose into the rectum and flushing it out with warm water. It is done in a professional environment by a practitioner. It may take a number of sessions to completely clean out the colon using this method and it is recommended that clients drink a lot of water and rest after each session. This is because some toxins are released into the bloodstream as a result of the process.

Many people report an increased sense of well being after a colon cleanse. Long term symptoms often disappear or are reduced. Eczema often heals along with a number of ailments.

If you cleanse your colon, you cleanse your body. The simple decision to cleanse your colon can change your whole life for the better.

Most people dealing with panic-anxiety tend to turn to the medical community first, and this is not necessarily a bad thing. It is generally accepted that some anxiety symptoms can be the result of a physical problem with the body — abnormal thyroid activity is one obvious example.

But the vast majority of anxiety and panic problems are not medical “conditions” caused by a physical ailment. They are emotional problems caused by poor “thinking habits.”

With every year that passes, the medical community is becoming more and more aware that our emotions have a profound effect on our physical health. For example, physical symptoms of panic-anxiety often seem so strong and pervasive, that can be difficult to believe they are caused by emotions, NOT a physical disorder in the body.

But even though doctors are becoming more aware of the connection between our state of mind and our physical health, unfortunately, this area of medicine is still not a priority in most medical schools. As a result, there are plenty of physicians out there who seem a bit clueless about the connection between emotional and physical problems.

Anxiety symptoms such as upset stomach, rapid pulse, breathing difficulty, compulsive yawning, tingling in the arms and legs, etc. are often treated with medications, as if they were caused by a physical health “disorder” or “disease.” In reality, this is a lot like putting a Band-Aid on a broken leg — it does not address the root cause of the problem, and isn’t likely to do much good.

What many doctors don’t tell patients with panic-anxiety is that anti-anxiety medications do not “cure” anxiety problems at all, or even treat the cause of the problem, which tends to be emotional in nature, NOT physical.

The truth is that overcoming these types of emotional issues requires an individual to change their lifestyle and their habits. If you continue the same lifestyle and especially “thinking habits” that brought on the anxiety problem in the first place, you can be sure the problem will continue. Prescribed drugs may alleviate some of the symptoms temporarily, but the problem itself won’t go away until you address the emotional issues that are causing it.

Bad Emotional Habits

As a former sufferer of anxiety I saw many physicians about the problem over the years, and not once in all that time did I ever hear a doctor mention the word “habits” in regard to my anxiety problem. This seems odd to me today, as I have come to realize that anxiety is ALL about habits.

The simple fact is that we all get into routines in life, and when a person is suffering with anxiety or panic attacks, it is clear that they have gotten into a routine (a series of habits) that does not serve them well at all. The solution is to simply change the routine, and first and foremost, this requires developing new “thinking habits.”

One powerful way to shake up your old routine, and develop new habits is to become very aware of what you are focusing on in your day-to-day life. Author and psychologist Albert Ellis is famous for saying “we become what we think about all day long,” and this is especially true when it comes to anxiety.

When we focus a lot of attention on anxious and worried thought, we tend to become more anxious and worried ourselves. To overcome these problems we must begin to take back control over our focus, and stop filling our minds with images of drama and conflict (especially unresolved conflict, like you’ll find in many television shows).

Panic-anxiety is usually a clear signal of an imbalance in our lives. Addressing the problem requires us to “shake things up” and challenge some of our old ways of thinking — those old (and unhelpful) “thinking habits.”

Kicking the smoking habit is known to be one of the hardest things to do. The addiction can be so overwhelming to so many people that they feel like they will be chained to smoking forever. And now more than ever, pharmaceutical companies charge in to the rescue on our TV screens, in our magazines and on our radios touting the new wonder patches, pills and inhalers that will supposedly make kicking the habit as easy as turning off a light switch.

But why is it that these drugs fail 95% of the time in getting smokers to quit for one year? Is it really nicotine that makes it so hard to quit smoking or is it the powerful beliefs of the mind? Nicotine is completely gone from the bloodstream in 72 hours from the last cigarette. But this is when the cravings become the strongest and this is the smokers first real challenge to over come a real physical desire. But the physical cravings gradually go away and studies have shown that after 30-45 days, the addiction is all psychological. And this is where most smokers who want to quit fail. With the physical cravings being so short-lived and being such a small part of failing, Nicotine Replacement Therapy or NRT only prolongs the physical addiction which is gone soon anyway but does nothing for the stronger phsychological pull that the smoker will eventually have to face anyway.

Like steel cables, the smoker has made pleasurable relationships with smoking such as hanging out and talking with other smokers. The good feelings they got were actually from the camaraderie and the companionship but because they were smoking during those times, the smoking is heavily associated in the smokers mind with these pleasures although the smoking had little or nothing to do with it.

Since smokers often smoke during or after meals or when drinking coffee, the pleasures they got from these things alone are now identified with smoking and they have difficulty imagining that they could actually enjoy one without the other.

But here is the funny thing. Smoking itself is not an enjoyable experience. The body actually rejects it. Hacking coughs, smelly clothes and hair, yellow nails and teeth, having to go outside where smoking is prohibited. All these things are what really make up the smokers world. But movies, TV and magazines have made smoking look so enjoyable and not to mention, cool, that reality of it is left at the door.

That’s what 39-year smoker Rick B. discovered for himself and this was the discovery that set him free from a lifetime enslavement to smoking when nothing else he ever tried worked at all. In his own words: “I must have said a thousand times, ‘I enjoy smoking’or’that cigarette will taste good right after dinner’, but that was because they (the Tobacco Industry) made me belive that smoking cigarettes was a natural and pleasurable thing to do. What I soon learned was that I really love not smoking!”

Rick was soon able to enjoy a life that he thought he would never know again. Foods tasting great, no more shortness of breath. His teeth are white again. He has a lot more energy and he thinks much more clearly. the big secret to his success was by retraining his mind with his own personal technique to see smoking for how it really is and disconnect any perceived pleasure from it.

And that is the secret behind ending most bad habits: severing the minds association of pleasure with them.

The number of overweight children, adolescents and adults is rising markedly. Obesity in children and adolescents predicts obesity in adult life, it predicts morbidity and mortality decades later, it is associated with cardiovascular risk factors, orthopaedic conditions and lower self-esteem and once present it is hard to treat. Preventing obesity is therefore of primary concern.

Nursing mothers who breastfeed for longer amounts of time may be helping their babies avoid weight troubles later in life, according to research.

Results gleaned from 17 studies over the last 39 years suggest an association between the number of months babies are breastfed and the risk of being overweight.
“One month of breastfeeding was associated with a 4 percent decrease in risk (of being overweight),” concludes Dr. Thomas Harder and colleagues in the study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

“These findings strongly support a dose-dependent association between longer duration of breastfeeding and decrease in (the) risk of (being) overweight.”
Adolescents who were breastfed for at least seven months were 20% less likely to be overweight than those breastfed for three months or less (odds ratio 0.80, 95% confidence interval 0.67 to 0.96). These results were adjusted as above.

There was an estimated 8% reduction in the risk of adolescent overweight for every additional three months of breastfeeding (with the highest category being nine months or more) (odds ratio 0.92, 95% confidence interval 0.87 to 0.98).

Investigators analyzed numerous studies dating back to 1966 up to 2005, looking at overweight rates for children who were breastfed and those who were exclusively fed with formula. After nine months of breastfeeding, the effect on being overweight plateaued, the researchers found.

Adolescents who were mostly or only fed breast milk in the first six months had a 22% lower risk of being overweight (odds ratio 0.78, 95% confidence interval 0.66 to 0.91) than adolescents who were mostly or only fed formula. These results were adjusted for the childrens age, sex, sexual maturity, energy intake, time spent watching television, physical activity, birth weight and birth order; the mothers body mass index, smoking, dietary restraint and weight cycling; and estimated household income.

Study authors did not outline specific reasons for the linkage between breastfeeding and being overweight. But some researchers believe breastfed babies are more familiar with signals of “fullness” than formula-fed babies, prompting them to stop feeding.

Two studies seem to disagree whether breastfeeding can reduce the risk of overweight in children. However, considering both studies, it may be the combination of mothers breastfeeding with having an optimum body mass index (implicating sharing healthy lifestyle habits with their children such as diet and physical activity) that reduces the risk of childhood overweight.

Gillman et al study found that breastfed babies are less likely to become overweight adolescents than formula fed babies and the protective effects are larger with longer periods of breastfeeding. In contrast, Hediger et al study did not find any association between breastfeeding and subsequent obesity.

In both studies maternal obesity is related to childhood/adolescent obesity implicating the role of genetic and environmental factors, such as shared lifestyle habits, e.g. diet and physical activity patterns.

The finding that overweight and obese mothers were less likely to breastfeed (perhaps because maternal adiposity prevents successful initiation or maintenance of breastfeeding) provides a further suggestion that it is a combined effect of maternal overweight with the absence of breastfeeding that results in an increased risk for becoming overweight in later years.

“The mechanisms by which breastfeeding affects the risk of (being) overweight are still unclear,” the study states. “(However), breastfeeding results in a lowered body weight gain during the critical neonatal periods, obviously caused by a lower mean caloric intake in breastfed infants, compared with formula-fed neonates .”

Scientific evidence has shown that breast milk contains all the essential nutrients and elements needed to nurture the healthy growth of a baby for the first six months of life. However, additional vitamin D supplementation is usually recommended by doctors for babies who are exclusively breastfed.

Additionally, Breast milk is already acknowledged as the best food for babies, giving unique immunological, growth and developmental benefits. If there is a chance that it can help prevent childhood obesity then this should be promoted, paying special attention to overweight mothers who are less likely to breastfeed and may need additional support with initiating and maintaining breastfeeding.

Breast milk is well suited for a baby’s delicate digestive system and is rich in antibodies, which help fight off bacteria and viruses. The Canadian Paediatric Society recommends that all newborns be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life and that the nursing can continue for two years or more.

Also, breast feeding seems to have a influence on the mothers body mass index as well. Mothers who fed their babies only breast milk in the first six months had the lowest average body mass index (24.5 kg/m2). Mothers who fed their babies only formula had the highest average body mass index (25.7 kg/m2).

Mothers who breastfed their babies for a longer period had a lower average body mass index than mothers who breastfed for shorter periods, e.g. mothers who breastfed for at least seven months had an average body mass index of 24.6 kg/m2 compared with 25.7 kg/m2 for mothers who breastfed for three months or less.

Mothers body mass index predicted their childrens weight. Mothers with a body mass index of more than 30 kg/m2 were 27% more likely to have an overweight adolescent than mothers whose body mass index was less than 25 kg/m2 (odds ratio 0.27, 95% confidence interval 0.21 to 0.33).

A type of fat that accumulates around the hips and bottom may actually offer some protection against diabetes, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

They said subcutaneous fat, or fat that collects under the skin, helped to improve sensitivity to the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar.

Mice that got transplants of this type of fat deep into their abdomens lost weight and their fat cells shrank, even though they made no changes in their diet or activity levels.

“It was a surprising result,” said Dr. Ronald Kahn of Harvard Medical School in Boston, whose study appears in the journal Cell Metabolism.

“We actually found it had a beneficial effect, and it was especially true when you put it inside the abdomen,” Kahn said in a telephone interview.

Kahn said he started the study to find out why fat located in different parts of the body seems to have different risks of metabolic disease such as diabetes.

Researchers have known for some time that fat that collects in the abdomen known as visceral fat can raise a person’s risk of diabetes and heart disease, while people with pear shaped bodies, with fat deposits in the buttocks and hips, are less prone to these disorders.

Now it turns out that subcutaneous fat fat found just under the skin may be actively protecting people from metabolic disease.

Kahn and colleagues conducted a series of experiments on mice where they transplanted subcutaneous fat from donor mice into the bellies and under the skin of mice.
Mice that got subcutaneous fat transplanted into their bellies started to slim down after several weeks, and they also showed improved blood sugar and insulin levels compared to mice that underwent a sham procedure.

“What we found was that when we put it in either place, there was some improvement in metabolism,” Kahn said.
“I think it’s an important result because not only does it say that not all fat is bad, but I think it points to a special aspect of fat where we need to do more research,” he said.

Kahn’s team is working to find the substances produced in subcutaneous fat that provide the benefit with the hope of developing a drug that might copy this effect. Although fat is known to produce several hormones, Kahn said none of the known hormones appeared to be involved in this process.

“If we can capture those (substances), we might have an opportunity to convert them into drugs or use them as guides to help develop drugs,” he said.
On the other hand, the build-up of visceral fat has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

The researchers found a specific protein is produced in much greater amounts by visceral fat than fat that lies just beneath the skin.

The study, by a US and German team, appears in the journal Cell Metabolism.

The researchers, from Harvard University and the University of Leipzig, analyzed 196 people.

They showed the genes which produce the protein – RBP4 – were up to 60 times more active in obese people with high levels of visceral fat than in lean people.

There is a multitude of long-term health resources online and people depend on this type of information to keep informed about factors that are crucial when making life-changing decisions. Some families rely on medical journals found through internet medical libraries to explain medical conditions. The information clarifies points that make commitment of loved ones to long-term care facilities as the only option left after a loved one has displayed uncontrollable rages and has become a threat to sustaining life if left to their own resources.

Families find the long-term health resources online to be a discreet method of finding information on conditions that are very sensitive and personal in nature. For anybody that is associated with the long-term committal process of a family member, the long-term health resources provide essential information that will let them know how the family member will receive treatments and the expected outcome of those treatments. Health resources online will allow families to obtain treatment costs at various facilities and learn which insurance plans are accepted.

Other health resources online will be very beneficial to a married couple if they are trying to have children. A woman’s reproductive health concerns are more complex at times, and some women prefer to read about en vitro fertilization techniques before the topic is discussed in the cold environment of a physician’s office. A woman can become well-versed in all medical conditions that could affect fertility and the long-term health resources online might point out birth defects that occur in women that give birth after a certain age milestone has been reached.

With this type of long-term health resources available, women are able to plan pregnancies and know which diet plans will be very nutritional for the growing fetus. Women can relax when armed with this information because the expectant mother will know that she is doing all of the right things to ensure that the baby develops in the womb properly. The long-term effects of drug use and alcohol dependency are outlined in clear language in long-term health resources, and women can get treatment for these medical conditions before harm comes to the child.

People use long-term health resources online to learn about the benefits of nutritional supplements. People from all lifestyles can use these dietary supplements to create healthy bodies and establish a firm sense of well-being that will stay with them throughout their life. People can use the long-term health resources to learn how to boost the immune system at various stages in life and the online health resources will point out which vitamins and supplements, when used in the right combination will provide the best defense when people are fighting all types of terminal illnesses.

Early in life, the effects of taking vitamins and supplements that ward off colds and flu symptoms will help families in keeping medical costs low. These extra nutrients will also help children develop better physiques and gain confidence among their peers. The long-term effects of certain symptoms might be indicators of a major health issue. Later on in life, the body might react differently to certain cold remedies and the online health resources can help people differentiate between medicines and make the right decision for people who suffer from allergies.

Ah, the advances of medicine.

I recently spoke with a friend of mine that was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a mastectomy a few days ago and I’d made plans to visit her in the hospital and provide care for her at her home. Imagine my surprise when she informed me that her hospital stay would consist of one night and that she planned to be up and about a few days after the surgery. She didn’t plan to return to work for 4-6 weeks but told me that her surgeon’s mother had recently undergone the exact same surgery and a few days later was working in her garden!

I had a similar experience last year. I had gallstones that were causing excruciating abdominal pain. As a result my doctor recommended gallbladder removal surgery. Do you know that as recent as 5 years ago this would have consisted of a 5″ to 8″ vertical incision from my ribs to my waist, 3-5 days in the hospital, and several weeks of recovery? Contrast that to modern day laparoscopic gallbladder surgery:

4 incisions are made in the abdominal area:

* 1 directly beneath the navel
* 1 on the right side of the abdomen (2 incisions)
* 1 beneath the sternum

The doctor inserts a laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera on the end) into one of the incisions and then inserts tools into the other three entry points in order to snip off and remove the gallbladder. If you have gallstones in ducts those gallstones are removed as well.

The hospital stay for laparoscopic gallbladder surgery is several hours. In other words, once the anesthesia wears off and you’re able to walk steadily on your own they send you home. I arrived at the hospital at 6:30am and was wheeled out the door around 2:00pm. After settling in at home I took all of 2 pain killers and I was just fine. The next day I took some Tylenol and only had a little discomfort. I was back at work full time in 10 days. To be honest I could have returned earlier but my family insisted that I stay out a little longer. Even so, when I returned to work my co-workers were shocked that I was able to return so quickly.

I’m amazed that you can have a major organ or body part removed in the morning and be at home in your bed the same afternoon. On the other hand I sometimes think people undergoing traditional surgery (not laparoscopic) are being released from the hospital too soon. My friend that had the breast removed is doing just fine but I can tell you that when I had traditional surgery 5 years ago (to have yet another organ removed) I was released on Day Two, definitely too soon. I was barely able to walk from my bed to the bathroom but was given the “good news” that I would be going home that day. As a result I ended up in my doctor’s office a day later because the incision had come apart.

Who’s to blame when this happens? Are physicians under pressure from hospital administrators to free up hospital beds? Are insurance companies steadily decreasing the number of days they’ll cover for hospital stays?

I sometimes wonder where we’ll be in 10 years with this issue. As we make more progress with minimally invasive surgical procedures I can only assume the number of surgeries conducted using laparoscopic techniques will increase. Medical progress is unavoidable (and needed) but hospital stays will continue to decrease in duration as well, hopefully at a pace that’s consistent with medical advances.

I can imagine this drive-thru scene:

“Welcome to Medi-King, may I take your order? Okay, I see you’re having your gallbladder removed. Would you like to get a meniscal cartilage repair with that order?”

GlaxoSmithKline, makers of the type 2 diabetes prescription drug known as Avandia, recently received warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after the company withheld post-marketing research information on Avandia.

Avandia, also known as its generic name rosiglitazone maleate, is an oral medication used to control an individual’s blood sugar level as well as continue to regulate sugar levels. Avandia was once reportedly the best-selling diabetic drug around the world, however, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine reported results from clinical trials of the drug, which found Avandia to have severe side effects on individuals both with a history of heart disease and without.

The report, released in May 2007, found that patients were more likely to suffer from heart disease after taking Avandia for a period of time and individuals with a history of heart disease were likely to suffer a worse outcome, as the drug increased the ill-effects of heart disease among patients and resulted in death from cardiovascular-related causes. In fact, the study found a 43 percent increased risk of myocardial infarction, otherwise known as a heart attack. Both regulators in the United States and in Europe increased warning labels of Avandia’s prescribing information as a result of the May 2007 report and sales have dropped by nearly half, according to news reports.

The warning letter from the FDA came after GlaxoSmithKline failed to meet their deadline for reporting the results and research of 10 ongoing clinical trials of Avandia. Federal regulations require that the companies provide FDA officials with updates of the after-market studies. The Avandia studies were over a six-year period ranging from 2001 to 2007. In November 2007 the FDA completed a routine inspection of the company and drug. Officials found that information from the trials was not adequately presented and information remained missing.

GlaxoSmithKline responded by stating that the information that was withheld from FDA officials had nothing to do with the potential safety risks of the drug and since the FDA inspection, the company has claimed that new training methods and programs have been implemented to avoid the loss of data reported to the FDA.

Avandia was approved for market in May 1999 and has been used as a potential drug to benefit Alzheimer’s disease as well as to treat type 2 diabetes. Currently, there are approximately 3.5 million individuals taking Avandia, although, that number has likely decreased with the continuation of negative reports surrounding the drug. In addition to the risk of heart disease, Avandia has been associated with other serious side effects including an increased risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures among patients. Researchers from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have found that Avandia disrupts the natural process of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, the two types of cells in the body the work to renew old bone growth with new, strong and healthy bone; although clinical trials are ongoing.

Other common side effects of the drug include headache, inflammation of sinuses, weight gain, back pain, swelling or fluid retention. Individuals who have taken Avandia and been victim to the serious side effects of the drug should speak with an experienced pharmaceutical attorney, as the potential for an Avandia lawsuit exists and may result in monetary compensation for the damage done to an individual’s health.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD) come in various forms but most focus on cleanliness to a degree. This disorder has always fascinated me because for a period of time I feared that I had the disorder.

After learning more about the disorder I found that I had some traits that are similar in nature to those of OCD but I do not suffer from it. In order to be diagnosed with the disorder the obsessions and compulsions must impact on the daily life and functioning of the sufferer.

This article will tell the tale of someone I met a few years ago that actually suffered a great deal with OCD. Before I start this story I want to say that I have changed the name and some of the particulars in order to protect the identity of my friend.

Hannah shared this story with me years after she received the help that she needed and she graciously gave me permission to re-tell her story in the hope that someone will read it and get help long before the situation gets out of control.

Even as a young child Hannah did not like to get dirty. She seemed to be overly concerned about dirt, almost so that she was terrified of the thought of it. By the preteen years Hannah was convinced that she was different from other people.

She know that this dread of dirt and germs was not completely logical but she knew that if she allowed herself to get dirty something dreadful would happen, this would most likely mean something terrible would happen to her mother.

Throughout the years the obsessions with cleanliness would wax and wane but never completely go away. At about 17 years of age Hannah decided that if she got dirty she would get a devastating disease. She began focusing on dirty hands as a culprit.

Hannah was convinced that it is next to impossible to have clean hands. She began washing her hands very frequently in order to combat the dirt and germs that continuously accumulated there. This obsession/compulsion resulted in her hands being red and sore.

Going to the bathroom was a time consuming process as Hannah had to sterilize the toilet before and after use, and then came the extreme hand washing. Taking a shower was also very time consuming because the shower had to be sterilized before and after use.

This meant Hannah had to allow time for the cleaning as well as time to attend to personal hygiene. She was becoming more and more a slave to the disorder. Hannah did not allow people to touch her because she felt their hands were dirty, however, she longed for a human touch.

Safety issues also became a concern for Hannah. She would check countless times to see that all doors and windows were locked. Hannah knew her fears were irrational but she could not dismiss them. She was becoming more and more depressed and lonely.

Eventually Hannah developed a compulsion to recite the alphabet backward in order to fight the obsessive and intrusive thoughts. She found that this would dissipate the anxiety for a short period of time.

Her avoidance behaviors continued and even escalated until it finally was undeniable that there was a real problem. Hannah visited her doctor and was placed on antidepressants. Her doctor recommended a consult with a psychologist.

From there Hannah was referred to a psychiatrist and began therapy sessions. With the help of the medications and the therapy Hannah is now a happy and healthy person.

Her journey through this disorder has been long and it definitely took a toil on her life. Hannah continues to use the recital of the backward alphabet as a coping mechanism when she feels distressed, however most of the symptoms of the disorder have disappeared.
